Alabama basketball head coach Avery Johnson appears to be on his way out in Tuscaloosa.

According to a report by AL.com’s Michael Casagrande, Johnson and Alabama are currently negotiating a buyout to the coach’s contract. The buyout “would be a mutually agreed upon parting of ways,” per the report.

The news comes just one day after Alabama embarrassingly lost in OT to Norfolk State in the first round of the NIT. One Norfolk State player made a comment that was a complete indictment of Johnson and his team.

Johnson has coached at Alabama since 2015, and assuming this is the end of his coaching era in Tuscaloosa, he’ll finish with a 75-62 overall record, including finishing 34-38 in conference play. The Tide finished 18-16 in 2018, including 8-10 in SEC play. The one-and-done in the NIT certainly didn’t help.

As the head coach at Alabama, Johnson made the NCAA Tournament just once in 2017-18, losing in the second round.

Assuming Johnson and Alabama part ways, it would be the second SEC head coaching job to come open. Texas A&M fired Billy Kennedy following the SEC Tournament.
