After two long years working as an intern for Alabama, Butch Jones has finally earned a promotion.

When the former Tennessee coach first joined Nick Saban’s staff, the Alabama head coach defined Jones’ role in Tuscaloosa as an intern with the program but for the 2020 season, Jones has been promoted to “Special Assistant to Head Coach” as listed in the online Alabama directory.

Here’s a screenshot of Jones’ new role with the Tide:

It’s very unusual for an assistant to stay on staff in an off-the-field role for three years in a row but Jones is that integral to the operation down in Tuscaloosa. Surely this has nothing to do with the fact Jones continues to receive buyout checks from Tennessee and is scheduled to continue to earn those checks until 2021.

Well, following the news of Jones’ new title, which was first reported by Matt Zentiz of AL.com, it hasn’t taken long for Twitter to chime in on the news that Saban has a new special assistant.
