National Signing Day is on Feb. 4 and the SEC is primed to bring in another impressive haul of top recruits in the 2015 recruiting class.

In the next 25 days, Saturday Down South counts down the top 25 recruits either committed to the SEC or strongly considering SEC schools.

No. 11 Kendall Sheffield

Position: Cornerback
247Sports ranking: No. 20 overall; No. 3 overall in Texas
Committed: Alabama

The skinny: Any time any team can dip into the state of Texas for a top-five prospect, they’re doing something right. In this case for Alabama, it’s in a major area of need moving forward. Kendall Sheffield is a Nick Saban prototypical lockdown corner. At 6-0, 180 pounds, Sheffield reminds me of a raw Morris Claiborne, who starred at LSU before leaving for the NFL. In fact, Claiborne and Sheffield are the exact same size out of high school and entering college. Sheffield is a blazer, and no receiver will outrun him. He’s very fluid in his hips as a cover corner, and that translates well to the next level.

Freshman projection: Although Sheffield is a five-star, he’s pretty raw as a cover corner, and it’s conceivable for him to gain a year’s experience before he really sees major playing time. However, with Alabama’s cornerback situation being a major area of need, should Sheffield have a good fall camp, he could find himself on the field. Do you think Alabama knows it needs to improve in the secondary? Including Sheffield, the Crimson Tide have seven defensive backs committed. Sheffield and fellow prospect Minkah Fitzpatrick are the two most talented, and both could see playing time in 2015.
