When it comes to rivalries in college football, it doesn’t get much bigger than the Iron Bowl. In fact, the argument can be made that Auburn-Alabama is one of the best rivalries across all sports.

That’s part of why it came as a surprise Wednesday during SEC Media Days when Alabama running back Damien Harris totally forgot about Auburn when he was asked about the Crimson Tide’s top rivalry game.

“I think I would say LSU,” Harris told reporters at the event. “Tennessee is obviously a rivalry game, we have the cigars and everything, but I would say LSU because they’re so much like us. We’re so similar in so many different ways, efficient offenses that use the ground game a lot, have great quarterbacks with very stellar defenses that are hard to play against. We just play very similar, so I think it shows that every game we have against them is a close game so I would say they’re our closest rival.”

The reporter then pointed out that Auburn would fall third and Harris realized he had made a mistake.

“Oh shoot, I forgot Auburn. Well, Auburn is a given. We’ll put Auburn number one and then take my answer for LSU and put that number two. Auburn is obviously number one, I forgot about them for a second.”

To be fair to Harris, the video does appear to show he made an honest mistake. It’s difficult to answer so many questions in front of such a large crowd of reporters.

Rivalries can also be defined in different ways whether its style of play as Harris mentioned or close games, but Auburn is far and away the Crimson Tide’s closest rival.

Alabama has won their last seven games against LSU and their last 11 against Tennessee. Auburn is truly the only program that gives the Crimson Tide much pause and the only team that beat them last season. Harris had just 6 carries for 51 yards in that contest, so perhaps it’s a game, and a team he wanted to forget about anyways.
