The Tennessee Titans made a pre-NFL Draft splash by trading for RB DeMarco Murray– the 2014 NFL Offensive Player of the Year– this offseason.

So when the Nashville-based pro team used one of three second-round picks on former Alabama RB Derrick Henry, it raised some eyebrows.

The questions began to pour in from the NFL pundits– how will they find enough carries for both running backs? Is DeMarco Murray going to be upset?

The answer to the former remains to be seen, but the answer to the latter came when the Titans phoned Murray in the moments following their decision to draft the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner at No. 45 overall.

Titans coach Mike Mularkey recalled the conversation he had with Murray to TitansOnline.com’s Jim Wyatt:

“First of all, he loved the pick,’’ Mularkey said of Murray. “And he said, “He’s going to make me better and I am going to do the same for him.’ He said, ‘I’m going to do whatever I can to make him a great player.”

“I told DeMarco, ‘Nothing has changed since we made the trade for you. You’re still going to be the guy who is going to carry the load for us and I know when you need to take a break and come off the field there will be no letdown when the next running back comes in, whoever that is’,’’ Mularkey said. “That is our mindset and I told him that directly not long after we made that pick, that he was clear with the direction we were going to go with it.”

Whew… that sound you hear is a collective sigh of relief for everyone involved.

Mularkey indicated to Wyatt that calling a player currently on your roster to explain a draft pick is not common practice in the league, but this was a special circumstance that the Titans felt warranted a conversation to ease any concerns.

Henry rushed for 2,219 yards and 28 touchdowns on his way to a Heisman Trophy and College Football Playoff national championship for the Crimson Tide last season.

Murray, who is a former third-round pick out of Oklahoma, has 5,228 career rushing yards in the NFL.
