It was a bittersweet season for New England Patriots DB/punt returner Cyrus Jones.

Jones is an unquestioned winner. A second-round rookie out of Alabama, Jones was a member of this year’s Super Bowl-winning team. At Alabama, he won three SEC titles and two National Championships.

While his good fortune is certainly something to appreciate, he didn’t feel as if he played enough of an integral role this past year for Bill Belichick’s team.

Jones relayed this message to The Baltimore Sun:

“I’ll never take credit for something I don’t feel I contributed to. I was part of the team, but I didn’t feel a part of it. I honestly felt cursed. I reached a point where I didn’t even want to play. I just didn’t have it. What I did this year was not me. I don’t care how anybody tries to sugarcoat it. Yes, I was a rookie. But I feel I should always be one of the best players on the field, no matter where I am.

But honestly, it was hell for me. That’s the only way I can describe it. I didn’t feel I deserved to be part of anything that was happening with the team. I felt embarrassed that these people probably thought they wasted a pick on me.”

There are a few reasons for the frustration Jones is projecting. For one, he fumbled the ball five times this season. Additionally, he was inactive for five of New England’s last six games — including the Super Bowl.

Jones entered the NFL with a decorated resume. Due to the fact he was picked in an early round, he was expected to impact the team in a positive manner.

As such, he’s vowed to turn things around next season:

“No such thing as an offseason for me. I didn’t earn it. This is not the end of the world for me. I have no doubt I’ll be back and this will be a thing of the past. It’s not like I forgot how to play football overnight.”
