Alabama redshirt freshman QB Blake Barnett decided this week to transfer from Alabama, four games into the 2016 season.

According to an AL.com report, one former NFL executive said the decision to leave the team midseason will be dissected by NFL scouts if Barnett plays well at his new school:

“If he turns out to be a star wherever he ends up, it still is going to haunt him somewhat,” said Greg Gabriel, the former director of college scouting for the Chicago Bears and a 30-year veteran in pro personnel. “If he becomes a prospect, then it becomes a red flag that needs to be answered. To me it’s a red flag on his football character and his personal character. They are two separate things.”

Barnett’s unwillingness to battle Jalen Hurts for the starting spot may look bad in the future:

“One of the biggest things you look for in evaluating a quarterback is his competitive nature, and the great quarterbacks are all extremely competitive,” he said.

No matter his reasons for leaving the Crimson Tide, Barnett can still become a top NFL prospect. If he puts up big numbers at his new school, there will be plenty of teams willing to look past the transfer decision and give the former Alabama quarterback a shot.
