In a game full of big plays, Alabama punt returner Xavian Marks had perhaps the biggest play, returning a punt 75 yards for a touchdown in the first half of the Crimson Tide’s 48-0 trouncing of Kent State.

Though DB Eddie Jackson normally handles the punt return duties (and is one of the best in the country at it), Marks got his chance on Saturday and made the most of it.

Coach Nick Saban said it’s important for the Tide to develop more special-teams depth, according to AL.com:

“We need more guys to be able to play on these teams so we don’t have to play guys that are starters, especially if they can make a significant contribution,” Saban said. “We think [he] might be able to be able to do that as a returner and I think it was good experience for him today.”

However, Saban added, Marks needs to show more consistency if he’s going to get more opportunities to return punts moving forward:

“Well we’ve been wanting to give him an opportunity to get back there but he let two balls hit the ground that gave them a lot of field position,” Saban said. “So probably about 50 yards’ worth. I know he had a punt return for a touchdown. I know he’s a very explosive guy. He’s got to make good choices and decisions because possession of the ball is the most important thing.”

No. 1 Alabama takes on Kentucky next weekend, so it’s possible Saban could decide to give Marks another chance against the Wildcats.
