TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In a sharp contrast to this week’s major polls the University of Alabama football team did not move back into the top four spots as the College Football Playoff Selection Committee unveiled its latest rankings on Tuesday evening.

With the Crimson Tide fifth, the committee had No. 1 Mississippi State, 2. Oregon, 3. Florida State, and 4. TCU, which was coming off a 41-20 victory over No. 7 Kansas State.

Committee chairman Jeff Long said on ESPN’s show to announce the rankings that the difference between Alabama and TCU was “very slight.”

Alabama, which defeated LSU in overtime, 20-13, hosts Mississippi State on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET, CBS). On Sunday the Associated Press Poll had Alabama fourth, and the Amway Coaches Poll had it third. Neither poll had Oregon ahead of Florida State, or TCU in the top four.

Auburn, which was in the top four last week, fell to No. 9 with its loss to Texas A&M.
