Lane Kiffin’s name has popped up in connection to almost every major head coaching vacancy in recent months.

But one former conference commissioner and coaching search consultant doesn’t think Alabama’s offensive coordinator is a lock to fill one of those positions.

Former Big 12 commissioner Chuck Neinas told AL.com he believes Kiffin’s off-the-field track record will hurt his chances of returning to the ranks of head coaches.

“It’s not a question of his coaching ability,” Neinas told AL.com. “It’s a question of…other things.”

Neinas was the commissioner of the Big Eight Conference from 1971-1980, and he served in an interim role for the Big 12 from 2011-2012. He even fronted a company, Neinas Sports Services, that helped has schools like Alabama and Auburn through coaching searches.

Kiffin has been a head coach at three other stops — the Oakland Raiders, Tennessee and USC. All three stints ended in a messy fashion, and he ruffled feathers in Knoxville by bolting for the Trojans’ job after justo ne season.

Kiffin’s unfavorable track record and reputation as somewhat of a social media troll, Neinas suggested, are enough to offset his sparkling success as an offensive coordinator. He has reformed the Crimson Tide into a spread attack in just three seasons, and it seems to be at its best even with true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts running the show.

Oregon is the most recent school to reportedly be interested in Kiffin, who has been associated with several other vacancies like those at Baylor and Houston. LSU coach Ed Orgeron is also reportedly trying to lure Kiffin to Baton Rouge as his new offensive coordinator.

If Neinas’ assessment is accurate, Kiffin could very well end up jumping ship to Alabama’s SEC West rival.
