Those expecting Jake Coker to assume control of Alabama’s starting quarterback job will have to wait until the fall, if not beyond.

None of the five Crimson Tide quarterbacks in contention for the starting job has stood out, coach Nick Saban said after Saturday’s scrimmage.

“Somebody has to take the bull by the horns,” Saban said, according to AL.com and the Tuscaloosa News. “We’re giving five quarterbacks a chance to play and no one has stood out to where you’d say, ‘That’s the guy.'”

Coker is competing with David Cornwell, Blake Barnett, Alec Morris and Cooper Bateman, though the latter has practiced at receiver. But, just like last summer when many expected the Florida State transfer to assume control of the offense, before fifth-year backup Blake Sims became the starter, it has yet to happen with Coker.

In fact, Cornwell may be the leader, if there is such a thing with one week left in the team’s spring practice. A four-star member of the 2014 class, Cornwell is a 6-foot-5, 240-pound pro-style quarterback who redshirted last year.

Alabama did not provide the media with quarterback stats after the scrimmage, but Robert Foster caught six passes for 102 yards as the Tide searches for a go-to receiving option to replace Amari Cooper.

We do know the defense created a lot of turnovers, according to Saban, and that Dillon Lee and Reuben Foster both intercepted passes.

Meanwhile, Geno Smith, who got arrested recently for a second DUI, worked with the first-team defense at safety along with Eddie Jackson, whom the team moved there from cornerback a few practices ago.

Saban said Smith to this point has done everything the team has required of him to return to the team, but added there will be more requirements this summer.

Alabama will practice a few more times this week before the annual A-Day game (3 p.m. ET, next Saturday).
