Arkansas went out-of-conference and got back to its winning ways in a 45-17 win over UAB Saturday afternoon.

Here are the five biggest takeaways from Arkansas’ win over UAB yesterday.

Arkansas limited mistakes: Penalties and turnovers had been the thorn in the Razorbacks’ side all season long, and both were held to a minimum in the win over UAB. Arkansas committed just one turnover and had only two penalties. As a result, the Hogs were able to go on some long scoring drives and didn’t give UAB any extra chances. That’s a winning formula. The key now is to replicate that success against better teams.

Run game works: After a pass-heavy game plan last week against Georgia, Bret Bielema and offensive coordinator Jim Cheney got back to what the Razorbacks do best. Arkansas totaled 273 yards rushing behind a career day from Jonathan Williams. He rushed for 153 yards on 18 carries. An effective run game opens up chances for quarterback Brandon Allen, who was 13 of 17 in the first half.

Beat who you’re supposed to beat: It was the Razorbacks’ final non-conference matchup of the season, and Arkansas did exactly what it needed to do. The Hogs played well and got better, allowing just 195 total yards of offense to UAB. Williams and Alex Collins regained their form running the football. Arkansas needed this win as the trip to Starkville looms.

More trickeration ahead?: The story of the game was the fake field goal in the second quarter. You have to assume Bielema will call that formation again or something similar to it, otherwise it’d be pointless to call that play up 21-0 against UAB. It will be interesting to watch if, moving forward, Arkansas finds itself in a tight game whether or not we see more trickery from the Hogs.

It was UAB: There are a lot of good things Arkansas can take away from the game, but it was a Conference USA opponent. The Hogs need to replicate that type of performance against their remaining opponents. Stick to the run game, let Allen make some throws and play aggressively on defense.
