After surviving a 13-point, fourth-quarter comeback by TCU to escape Fort Worth with a 41-38 double-overtime victory, the Arkansas secondary doesn’t get a breather.

It’ll once again be put to the test when the Razorbacks host non-conference foe Texas State at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

Although Arkansas hung on to beat its former Southwest Conference rival in the first meeting between the two teams since 1991, it wasn’t easy. At the forefront of the Horned Frogs’ comeback effort was the passing game led by quarterback Kenny Hill — a Texas A&M transfer — and a solid group of wide receivers.

Hill completed 36-of-56 pass attempts and finished the night with 377 yards, a touchdown and an interception in defeat. Three different TCU receivers had big nights as KaVontae Turpin (7 catches, 126 yards), Kyle Hicks (8 catches, 92 yards) and Ty Slanina (7 catches, 75 yards) each had success against Arkansas’ defense, which held Louisiana Tech quarterback J’mar Smith to 212 passing yards and an interception in Week 1.

There was a lot of chatter about the Horned Frogs’ passing attack leading up to the game, but Paul Rhoads and his secondary proved to be up to the challenge. They may have allowed Hill and the TCU offense to rack up yards in bunches, but the Razorbacks still managed to leave Fort Worth with a win after allowing just one touchdown pass.

Despite making his first-career start, sophomore cornerback Ryan Pulley was among the leaders on the secondary as he recorded 4 tackles and 3 pass breakups against TCU. Another sophomore, Santos Ramirez, shined in the win and was routinely making big hits from his safety position. Junior cornerback Henre’ Tolliver also harassed Hill, even chasing him down and getting the tackle on a 26-yard run — his longest of the night.

While the defense proved it can limit a high-powered passing game in TCU last week, Texas State will boast another explosive aerial attack on Saturday night. Even if the Bobcats don’t boast the same collection of talent as the Horned Frogs do, they still showcased a dynamic offense when they won a triple-overtime shootout with Ohio, 56-54, in Week 1.

Texas State quarterback Tyler Jones completed 40-of-55 pass attempts for 418 yards and 4 TDs, though he was intercepted twice in the win. The signal-caller spread the ball around as four different receivers finished with 60 receiving yards or more. Eric Luna (10 catches, 90 yards, 1 TD), Elijah King (6 catches, 89 yards, 2 TD) and Gabe Schrade (6 catches, 72 yards) led the way, while Tyler Watts added 60 yards and a score on 4 catches.

The Bobcats will enter Saturday fresh after having a bye in Week 2, giving the offense even more time to prepare for the Razorbacks’ defense. They should undoubtedly be taken seriously, the passing attack especially, but some Arkansas fans may already be looking ahead to Week 4 when the Razorbacks open SEC play against Texas A&M in a primetime showdown at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.

That game has been circled on the calendar since the schedules were released, and the Aggies will likely give the Arkansas’ pass defense another test for a third straight week. Former Oklahoma gunslinger Trevor Knight has looked sharp through the first two weeks as he has already thrown for 583 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.

Like TCU and Texas State, the Aggies possess multiple deep threats with the ability of getting vertical for big plays. Christian Kirk (13 catches, 164 yards, 2 TD) and Josh Reynolds (6 catches, 131 yards, 1 TD) are Knight’s primary deep threats as both have hauled in touchdown passes of 40 yards or more.

However, before Arkansas and Texas A&M can meet in Dallas, the Razorbacks must first pass another early season exam. The Bobcats will certainly be pulling out all the stops to pull off the upset in Fayetteville.

In order for Arkansas to take care of business and improve to 3-0, the defense will have to stop yet another impressive passing attack.
