While there is still time for the Arkansas Razorbacks to land more recruits in the days leading up to signing day, the Hogs have already addressed some needs with the class of 2017.

This year, Arkansas put a lot of stock into junior college players, and it paid off when the program landed Jeremy Patton, the top-ranked tight end in JUCO. However, Patton wasn’t the only JUCO standout the Razorbacks went after.

The Hogs also landed two talented wide receivers from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, the same school which was highlighted in the first season of the Netflix original series “Last Chance U.”

Brandon Martin, who is ranked as a 4-star and the No. 2 JUCO receiver by 247Sports, will be a major addition to the offense. So will his Mississippi Gulf Coast teammate, Jonathan Nance, a 3-star receiver who left Southern Mississippi in 2015 in hopes of someday finding a spot in the SEC.

There might be plenty of talent at the top of Arkansas’ recruiting class, but the Hogs still fell short of last year’s crop of incoming players. A year ago, the Razorbacks’ class ranked 23rd in the nation and ninth in the SEC.

Although things can change on signing day and in the next few days leading up to it, Arkansas ranks lower both nationally and in the conference.

SEC class rank: 10
Overall class rank: 28
5-stars: 0
4-stars: 3
3-stars: 19

Did they own the state? The Razorbacks only landed four recruits from Arkansas, though those four players each rank in the top five. Anchoring the in-state recruits is Montaric Brown, a 4-star safety from Ashdown.

Even though SEC West rival Alabama secured the No. 2 recruit in Arkansas in 4-star defensive tackle Akial Byers – a Fayetteville native – the Hogs received commitments from the remainder of the top five, all of which are 3-star recruits.

Jarrod Barnes, who is listed as an athlete from Cabot, wide receiver Koilan Jackson and tackle Kirby Adcock are all going to play for the Razorbacks.

There are only a handful of other recruits from Arkansas who landed big-time offers, as 3-star quarterback Taylor Powell – the sixth-ranked prospect in the state – will play at Missouri. Iowa State received a commitment from No. 8 Josh Johnson, a wide receiver, and No. 9 Tre Norwood, a cornerback, is headed to Oklahoma.

Even with Brown, Powell, Johnson, and Norwood going to other major programs, the Razorbacks did a good job of securing four of the top five players in the state.

Top player: With Jeremy Sprinkle set to graduate, the Razorbacks were in desperate need of a tight end who can make an instant impact for the offense. They got their man in Patton, who was also courted by SEC West rivals Alabama and Auburn.

In the end, the Hogs held off their division counterparts, as well as a late push from Southern Cal., to land the 6-foot-6, 230-pound tight end.

Still chasing: Among the players Arkansas is still in the running for is Chevin Calloway, a 4-star cornerback from Dallas. Calloway is the No. 17 corner in the entire class, and he has received 32 offers from major programs nationwide.

According to 247Sports, the Hogs are in line to land him. They are joined by Ole Miss and Texas as the three schools Calloway seems legitimately interested in, and 247Sports lists Arkansas as “warmer,” while Ole Miss and Texas are both “warm” on the talented corner’s list of offers.

Best unit: Between Martin and Nance, it’s safe to say wide receiver is the strongest position for this recruiting class. But the Razorbacks didn’t settle for just the two Mississippi Gulf Coast teammates, they also landed two 3-star receivers in Maleek Barkley and Jackson.

Biggest area of need filled: Even though the Razorbacks didn’t address the interior of the offensive line, they will bring in a trio of 3-star offensive tackles in Dalton Wagner, Shane Clenin and Adcock.

One of the three may find himself playing on the inside, but it was important for the Hogs to address tackle considering they lose left tackle Dan Skipper, who was the most consistent player on a weak offensive line.

Better or worse than last year? On the surface, it seems as though the 2017 class is as solid as can be. In a lot of ways it is, but it still falls short when stacked against the 2016 class.

For starters, Arkansas landed 5-star defensive lineman McTelvin Agim last year. This year, however, the team failed to secure any 5-star recruits. There was also a drop off in 4-star talent, as the team had five players a year ago compared to the three they locked down this season.

The Hogs also addressed the interior of the offensive line in 2016, with guards Deion Malone and Jake Henrich both committing to the program.
