Most known for his ability to develop and produce NFL offensive linemen, Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema isn’t too shabby at producing running backs either.

One of the more incredible stats from the college ranks comes from Bielema, as the Razorback and former Wisconsin coach has produced 10 consecutive seasons of at least one 1,000-yard running back. Judging by his comments made to Ivan Maisel of ESPN’s Championship Drive podcast, look for that number to extend to 11 this season.

Maisel asked Bielema about his running backs Tuesday during the coach’s stint at ESPN headquarters for the SEC’s carwash event. While many are excited to see four-star signee Devwah Whaley suit up for the Razorbacks, Bielema indicated the returning running backs should not be counted as the more likely 1,000 backs this season.

“I think Kody Walker, he was at 260, 265 last year, we trimmed him down to 240,” Bielema said. “I think he could be an every down back, has a 1,000 in him. And then Rawleigh Williams, who was a freshman a year ago, who was really on a blaze and probably on pace to be a 1,000 rusher before he broke his neck. He’s back, should be a big factor on our offense.”

Walker was poised to play fullback last season for Arkansas before star running back Jonathan Williams broke his foot. Following that unfortunate injury, Walker had to split time at running back in 2015. While backing up Alex Collins, Waker had 394 rushing yards on 90 attempts last season. Rawleigh Williams appeared in seven games as a true freshman but only exceeded more than eight carries in two games. He finished his debut season with 254 yards on 56 carries before his injury.

As for Whaley, while Bielema didn’t give any specific expectations for the true freshman, he continued his offseason of high praise for the young running back during the podcast.

“Devwah Whaley probably in my evaluation of high school film, probably one of the more complete high school running backs I’ve ever signed,” Bielema said. “So I’m excited to see him get in that mix.”

Considering all the talented backs Bielema has produced, it’s praise like that that has Razorback Nation so high on the true freshman entering the season. But until Whaley has a complete understanding of Dan Enos’ offensive system and learns his passing protection assignments, don’t expect Bielema to turn him loose with at least two competent options ahead of him on the depth chart.
