In the last 14 years, some legendary SEC quarterbacks have scorched every corner of the SEC’s record books.

But as impressive as the careers of Eli Manning, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Aaron Murray and Johnny Manziel were, none of these titans put up as impressive a three-game stretch as Arkansas’ Brandon Allen is currently in.

In the last three weeks against Ole Miss, LSU and Mississippi State, Allen did something no other SEC quarterback had done since 2001: throw for at least 14 touchdowns and 950 yards with a QB rating of at least 190. Here’s his per game breakdown via sports-reference.com:

Date Opponent Outcome Yards TD Int Rating Completions Attempts %
11/7/2015 @ Mississippi W 442 6 0 199.8 33 45 73.3
11/14/2015 @ Louisiana State W 141 1 1 138.4 9 16 56.3
11/21/2015 Mississippi State L 406 7 0 202.8 30 43 69.8
Total 989 14 1 191.6

The last SEC quarterback to put up these kinds of passing numbers was Florida’s Rex Grossman, who threw for 1159 yards, 14 touchdowns and tallied a 209.7 QB rating during one three-game stretch in 2001 against Kentucky, LSU and Mississippi State.

Now, on the backend of one of the most tumultuous careers in Razorback history, Allen joins Grossman in this deed.* Early in his career, Allen endured an egged pickup truck, then was the victim of apparent arson, while all along sustaining constant criticism from outspoken Arkansas fans. Even during the first half of this season, he often took the majority of blame for his offense’s severe fourth quarter woes. In total, the “amount of vile thrown his way on social media, message boards and talk radio is probably only rivaled in Arkansas history by Houston Nutt,” Arkansas Fight’s Doc Harper observes.

But that ire has transformed into full-fledged love and respect among most Arkansas fans  with the strong performances Allen has put up in the latter half of this season. Allen now has two games left, starting with Missouri today, to help Arkansas achieve its most successful season of the Bret Bielema era. He can lead Arkansas to back-to-back bowl game wins in back-to-back years for the first time in program history.

Allen has clearly proven he can be a star at this level. But what about the next?

Rex Grossman never achieved stardom in the NFL but he did end up starting for at least one whole season and played for 12 years altogether.

Will Brandon Allen one day follow in Grossman’s steps again?
