With more than 3,000 yards passing and 29 touchdowns heading into Friday’s regular-season finale against Missouri, Arkansas senior quarterback Brandon Allen is not only having the best season of his career, he’s having one of the best years in Razorbacks history.

Allen has steadily improved throughout four years in Fayetteville, culminating in a senior season in which he’s completed 65 percent of his passes and thrown just six interceptions, and is likely going to go down as one of the top quarterbacks in program history. But where exactly does he rank?

Arkansas was primarily a running team during its heyday of the 1960s and ’70s under legendary coaches Frank Broyles and Lou Holtz. Billy Moore is the only Arkansas quarterback ever named an All-American, taking the honor in 1962. But Moore didn’t have a single 250-yard passing game in his career.

Comparing apples to apples, it’s only fair to look at Allen against more recent quarterbacks with Tyler Wilson and Ryan Mallett being the best.

Allen, with 3,023 passing yards so far this season, has 7,046 for his career. With three games of more than 400 yards this season, he has three of the top seven single-game performances in school history. His 63 passing touchdowns this season are a school record and he has 24 interceptions.

Mallett played his freshman season at Michigan before transferring to Arkansas and becoming eligible in 2009. In two seasons with the Razorbacks he completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 7,493 yards and 62 touchdowns with 19 interceptions.

Wilson, who backed up Mallett for part of his career, took over as the starter at Arkansas in 2011 and like Allen had great seasons as a junior and senior. Wilson completed 62.6 percent of his passes for 7,765 yards with 52 touchdowns and 26 interceptions.

Assuming Allen has at least an average game against Mizzou, he’ll finish his career with numbers strikingly similar to both Mallett and Wilson with all three spending two seasons as the Razorbacks’ starter.

Judging on an overall career, Allen might rate slightly below Mallett and Wilson, but he should get plenty of credit for an impressive amount of improvement during his time at Arkansas. His 2015 season has been ridiculously efficient with a 168.4 passer rating and he’s carried a Razorbacks team that suffered key injuries and got off to a terrible start to a 6-5 record with wins against LSU and Ole Miss.

He’s also done it all playing for a coach in Bret Bielema who would prefer to rely on the running game.

Allen faces a tough Mizzou defense in his senior night game, but if he can play well and lead the Hogs to victory one more time this season he’ll solidify his place among the top handful of quarterbacks ever to wear an Arkansas uniform.
