You can count ESPN college football analyst Brad Edwards among those hesitant to say Arkansas made the right hire when it named Chad Morris head coach. Until he sees more, Edwards seems to be clearly in a wait-and-see mode based on recent comments he made on the radio.

During a Tuesday appearance on Arkansas-based radio program Sports Talk with Bo, hosted by Bo Mattingly, Edwards was asked about the Razorbacks chances to return to a bowl game in the first year under Morris. While ESPN’s Football Power Index, or FPI, gives the team a good shot at finishing as a 6-6 team, Edwards explained that not all teams projected to finish 6-6 by the system are equal.

“So much of it has to do with the schedule,” Edwards said on the show. “You mentioned Arkansas is at nearly six wins by FPI. LSU is projected at six wins, also. LSU is considered a better team than Arkansas but LSU also has a really tough schedule. Obviously, the SEC portion of that schedule they can’t control but so much of it has to do with just winning the games you are supposed to win — that’s where it starts.”

The non-conference schedule Edwards mentions lays out like this for the Razorbacks: Eastern Illinois, at Colorado State, North Texas and Tulsa. Whereas LSU plays vs. Miami (in Arlington), SE Louisiana, Louisiana Tech and Rice.

The ESPN analyst also touched on the team’s transition from Bielema to Morris.

“How much of a breath of fresh air did they need? Was Bielema getting old to the point where it was getting old for the players where they just needed to wipe the slate? I recognize it’s a different offensive system,” Edwards said. “It probably won’t click from game number one because of that but sometimes just a simple attitude change among the players, like they are starting over, can help and can be worth something.”

Mattingly also shared this segment from his interview with Edwards, in which Edwards questions how much success Morris will have coaching in the SEC West:
