In preparation for Saturday’s showdown between Mississippi State and Arkansas, Saturday Down South is taking a look at the key matchups that may decide the game between the Bulldogs and the Razorbacks.

Arkansas offense vs. Mississippi State defense

Arkansas got a much-needed win over UAB last week, but now must travel to Starkville to face No. 1 Mississippi State.

The Razorbacks amassed 484 total yards behind a very balanced attack. Head coach Bret Bielema stated this week his goal was for his offense to average 200 yards both on the ground and through the air.

Mississippi State boasts a very good front seven, while the secondary has some vulnerabilities. Kentucky’s Patrick Towles showed  Mississippi State can be beaten through the air. Towles threw for a career-high 401 yards.

Arkansas needs a strong effort from both Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins. The two combined to rush for 235 yards last week in the win over UAB. If the Hogs can match the physicality up front, dominate the line of scrimmage and run the football effectively, that will open things up for Brandon Allen and the Razorbacks through the air.

Allen has targets outside; nine different receivers caught passes on Saturday afternoon. He’s been very good in play-action. If Williams and Collins can run the football well, that will open up chances for the Hogs.
