No. 9 Auburn fell 34-7 to No. 15 Georgia on Saturday night in Athens.

Here are five takeaways from the Auburn’s 34-7 loss to Georgia:

  • Undisciplined: Auburn played perhaps its most undisciplined game of the season on Saturday night. The Tigers committed seven penalties and turned the ball over three times. There were multiple times on both sides of the ball where Auburn had communication issues, whether it be alignment or play-calling.
  • Reeling from month of bad football: October was a nightmarish month for Auburn defensively, and November hasn’t gotten off to any better of a start in any phase of the game. The offense couldn’t get anything going against a good Georgia defense, and the defense continued to struggle. Two special teams blunders led to 10 Georgia points before the half. Auburn now has a two-game season; Samford and Alabama. What do the Tigers do with what’s before them?
  • See ya, SEC West: Alabama did its part on Saturday afternoon by defeating Mississippi State, but Auburn failed to hold up its end of the bargain. With the loss to Georgia, Auburn’s SEC West hopes are officially gone. It would have been tough for the Tigers to repeat with its grueling schedule, but I don’t know many anticipated Auburn having three losses midway through November.
  • Offense can’t avoid struggles: Even on Saturday night, Auburn’s offense — which had hit its stride as of late — wasn’t immune to struggling. Nick Marshall struggled to throw the ball, missing on several throws throughout the night, and the run game was shut down by a ferocious Georgia front seven.
  • Evaluate: Samford and Alabama remain. Auburn likely will finish 8-4 and receive an invitation to a mid-tier bowl. Auburn’s slide during the second half of the season will have to be evaluated closely; the Tigers need answers on defense in order to be a dominant team and compete with its cross-state rival. As we near the end of the season and enter the off-season, it will be interesting to watch this program and see what kinds of moves are made.
