Cam Newton is committed to getting in the best possible shape during the offseason. This year, that involves adopting a vegan diet.

Newton, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, says going vegan is part of his plan to get his body ready for the 2019 season.

“I’m a constant work in progress,” Newton said in his YouTube vlog. “I always try to tap into something that’s going to better me as an athlete, as a parent, as a person. So this offseason, I was like, ‘Man, I want to try something different.’ I’m vegan now.”

Newton reveals he has been eating vegan for about a month. The former Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn was already a pescatarian (choosing to eat seafood, but not the meat from other animals), so it’s not an incredibly drastic change to his habits. He called it part of a plan to shed a few pounds. Newton is listed at 6-5, 245 pounds on the Carolina Panthers roster. He hopes to get down to 235 pounds in the offseason.

“I want to be the best football player that I can be because without football nothing else flourishes — any business ventures or anything else,” Newton said. “I have to be able to take care of my body.”
