Daniel Carlson showed off his leg during his first two preseason games with the Minnesota Vikings. And that was enough to decide the team’s kicking competition.

On Monday, the Vikings announced that they released veteran kicker Kai Forbath and that Carlson will be the starter entering his rookie season. The former Auburn kicker was selected by Minnesota in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

“He’s been pretty calm all along,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer told the media, including ESPN.com’s Courtney Cronin. “Time will tell on that. It was nice seeing him in Denver, going out and kick those. It will be a little bit different when we’re playing San Francisco, I’m sure. We’ll just see how it goes. You make your decision and live with it.”

During the Vikings’ preseason game against the Denver Broncos on Aug. 11, Carlson went 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts, including a 60-yarder, and made all four of his extra-point attempts. He handled kickoff duties against the Jacksonville Jaguars this past Saturday.

Carlson was a first-team All-SEC selection in three straight seasons from 2015-17. He also was named a second-team All-American each of those years.

Over his four seasons with the Tigers, Carlson made 92 field goals in 114 attempts with a career long of 56 yards. He went 23-for-31 in 14 games for Auburn in 2017.

Carlson and the Vikings open the 2018 season when they host the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 9.
