Auburn’s quarterback battle is currently a three-man competition, but were the Tigers close to adding another signal-caller?

Fox Sports college football writer Bruce Feldman recently spoke to Davis Webb, a graduate transfer quarterback from Texas Tech who changed his commitment from Colorado to Cal. Former Texas A&M offensive coordinator Jake Spavital, now at Cal, was a major factor in Webb’s decision. The former Red Raider told Feldman he also considered Auburn, but ultimately did not visit:

“There were some serious talks, but I felt like it didn’t fit me as a quarterback.”

Webb, who had a 46-22 touchdown to interception ratio in three seasons at Texas Tech, would have been the most experienced option for the Tigers. Senior Jeremy Johnson and redshirt sophomore Sean White, who split time as starters, both return this season, but former Florida State signee and junior college transfer John Franklin III is considered by many to be the leader of the pack.

“He is a talented young man, he’s very fast and he wants to be good,” AU coach Gus Malzahn recently said of Franklin. “I think that’s important. He’s still learning the offense but the fact that he’s very coachable, wants to be good, he’s right in the middle of the thing right now.”

Malzahn has also said he does not plan to use a two-quarterback system, and will go with “one starter” who will be named sometime prior to the season opener against Clemson.
