In today’s world of college football, quarterbacks often begin plans to transfer before competitions are even decided. Given that reality, it would be understandable if Auburn junior Sean White started looking around when the Tigers brought in Jarrett Stidham to take his job.

All things considered, a certain level of animosity between the two would have been understandable. However, judging by comments made by both quarterbacks this week, that belief couldn’t be any further from the truth.

Immediately after coach Gus Malzahn named Stidham the starter, White expressed his endorsement of the decision. After starting games in each of the last two seasons, White appears poised to head into the season willing to swallow his pride and accept a backup role.

During his Thursday appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show, Stidham echoed a similar endorsement when asked to describe his relationship with White.

“It’s been really great. Obviously, Sean has a lot of experience playing in this offense and this league,” Stidham said on the show. “The SEC is a monster league. He’s had a lot of experience and he knows the ins and outs of the offense better than I do. He’s been really supportive of me and everything that’s been going on. Very positive.

“He’s bringing a great attitude every single day and it’s been fun to compete with him and work with every day. He’s been nothing but great and I think we have a really strong relationship.”

In a day and age with so much transition at the game’s most important position, it’s refreshing to see two players willing to work together and accept their roles without hostility. Considering White is only a play away from entering the game, there’s a chance Auburn will need the veteran to step in and contribute at some point this season.

The maturity shown by both players could go along way in helping the entire locker room develop a championship mentality. At the end of the day, that’s what the quarterback position is all about.
