Here are some quick thoughts on Auburn’s 56-34 win over Idaho on Saturday:

What it means: It’s been a difficult season for Auburn, but the win over Idaho means the Tigers have reached bowl eligibility. Auburn also got some momentum heading into next week’s game against Alabama.

What I liked: Was it the Vandals’ non-SEC defense or did Auburn’s offense find another uptick? Most likely it was a combination of both, but the Tigers offense certainly also did their job. Jovon Robinson and Peyton Barber contributed to the run game equally against one of the worst run defenses in the nation. Jeremy Johnson played well at quarterback, targeting Ricardo Louis, Melvin Ray and Tony Stevens often. As expected, Auburn’s coaches had Johnson make some throws downfield, both in scoring situations and on appropriate first downs, just to build up some confidence for the upcoming game against Alabama.

What I didn’t like: While there was no shortage of crowd-pleasing defensive plays, Auburn’s defense looked like it took it easy today. Both of Idaho’s mobile quarterbacks were able to make the most of their running ability, as well as make accurate throws. While the last two games have seen opponents held to under 400 yards, Idaho totaled 479.

Who’s the man: While the offense performed well across the board, Jeremy Johnson stands out for being mistake-free and making some excellent long-range passes. While accuracy is still somewhat of an issue for Johnson, he is still dangerous with his arm and that capability cannot be ignored by any team.

Key play: After Auburn’s defense got its second interception of the game, Johnson aired the ball out for 56 yards to Louis, an explosive play that also served to restore faith in Johnson’s quarterback abilities. A couple of plays later, Johnson slipped into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown run.

What’s next: Auburn closes out its regular season just as it always does, against Alabama in the Iron Bowl.
