As coaching positions come open across the country this week, SEC assistants are going to be mentioned, and possibly good fits, for many of them.

One is at Charlotte, where the school announced Sunday that it has fired coach Brad Lambert.

“We’ve decided to make a change in our football program,” Athletics Director Mike Hill said. “It is a decision I made after an opportunity to assess my first football season here. It’s about the trajectory of the program and putting us in the best position for the future. We elected to make this decision now so that we could begin the search immediately.”

The Charlotte 49ers have been an improved football team this season. But not improved enough to save Lambert’s job.

Lambert, the only coach the 49ers have had in their program’s six years of existence, was fired Sunday. Lambert, who has a record of 21-48, will coach the final game of the 49ers’ season Saturday at Florida Atlantic. Charlotte is 4-7 and on a three-game losing streak.

One name that surfaced for the job is Auburn DC Kevin Steele, who’s coached the Tigers since 2016, according to Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports and The Athletic. Steele came to Auburn from LSU, where he also was defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He’s also been a defensive coordinator at Alabama and Clemson.

Steele’s stint at Clemson is what makes the most sense for this possible move. He was there from 2009-2011. Clemson won the 2011 ACC title, its first since 1991, and Steele’s 2010 Clemson defense led the ACC and ranked No. 13 nationally in points allowed, surrendering 18.8 points per game.
