Blue-collar defensive player of the week: Montravius Adams, DL, Auburn

Tipping the scales somewhere in the 310-pound range, Auburn defensive lineman Montravius Adams runs effortlessly with the football.

So well, maybe Gus Malzahn explores another option in the form of a gargantuan 6-foot-4 sophomore in goal line packages for this week’s showdown with LSU?

Adams nearly scored his first career touchdown during Saturday’s win over Louisiana Tech and was the anchor on Ellis Johnson’s defense with a tackle, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Adams’ near-miss on a pick-six from 42 yards out in the first quarter came after he snared a deflection off the right arm of linebacker Kris Frost. Rumbling down the sideline with nothing but grass ahead of him, Adams was tripped up at the 5 by Louisiana Tech pint-sized wide receiver Trent Taylor.

Auburn’s Cameron Artis-Payne punched it in on the ensuing play for an early lead.

The sideline mob centered around Adams.

“I was just thinking touchdown,” Adams said. “I was in the moment.”
