Kevin Sumlin

One of the SEC’s up-and-comers in College Station, Sumlin’s an advocate of the Air Raid offense, learning under the Bob Stoops coaching tree at Oklahoma in the mid 2000s before becoming a first-year head coach at Houston in 2008. With the Cougars, Sumlin’s passing offenses were consistently ranked near the top of country in terms of production and proved scheme sometimes has a far greater influence than personnel.

Sumlin’s gaudy numbers and proven success at Houston caught the eye of the powers that be at Texas A&M and  in 2012, the Aggies came calling. Sumlin took the SEC by storm as a rookie and orchestrated one of college football’s best single-season offensive performances in history through freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel. Texas A&M became the first SEC team ever to total over 7,000 yards from scrimmage and Manziel, through pinpoint precision in the pocket and on the run, was the Heisman Trophy’s first freshman winner.

Sumlin’s coaching career began as a grad assistant at Washington State in 1988, two years after finishing up at Purdue where he played linebacker. Over the next decade, Sumlin spent time on several staffs as an offensive assistant before callingg plays for the Aggies under R.C. Slocum in 2001. He moved on to Oklahoma where he developed a working knowledge of the Air Raid offense from several of the scheme’s disciples that he would later  utilize as a head coach at Houston — with assistant Dana Holgorsen’s help — and Texas A&M.
