Comment on What Texas A&M Brings To The SEC

Oklahoma graduate here. Everyone is talking about aTm joining the SEC (for good reason) since it is a done deal. But I think the real prize the SEC could get here is picking up OU. As a graduate I am sad to see that it isn't happening, but I keep hoping OU is the next to come after aTm if/when it happens. Besides the obvious success with our football program and what we bring to the table, I think OU is a more natural fit to the SEC culture than any other school in the country. I read where aTm fans got on here talking about "be patient with us, no one is used to rooting for their conference partners in OOC games" on another article. That is crap. The only two fan bases I have seen who are smart enough to root for the other conference teams in the Big XII are OU's and UT's. Most OU fans I know root for Big XII teams no matter who they are (including Texas). Most Texas fans I know root for everyone except aTm and that is just because of the unnatural hatred between those two schools. However, pretty much every other school (including aTm) roots against anyone in the Big XII just because they don't like them. As all of you know, I completely agree this is idiotic. If you get your wish and everyone in your conference loses every OOC game, you might as well be in the Mountain West. To be considered anyone, you need to beat good teams, which means they have to win their OOC games. Besides that natural fit, a game day in Norman has a similar passion to those in SEC country (I have been to many SEC games). OU has a large national fan base, we still help bring the Texas foot print with us. More than half of our alum's live in the Dallas/Houston markets. We bring a $1.2 billion endowment, we are expected to be an AAU member in the next 5-10 years (no easy task). Most importantly, we add another elite program to the already strong SEC. ESPN and others have voted us as the number 1 most prestigious football program in history. I know I probably don't have to sell anyone here on our credentials, OU would be a good addition for any conference to have. I just wish our administration would see it that way too. I understand their reasons for not seeking the SEC as our first choice, but I wish they would realize conference alignment is about football first, and everything else in a very distant second. Here is to hoping I am joining you all on these boards someday as a conference partner... [View]
