Regardless of Ward's fate or anyone's opinion about it, two things are known: the defense is physically overmatched every week and they fail to execute in the clutch. If it's a matter of talent then that falls on the recruiters' shoulders (Ward). If it's a matter of execution that falls on the coordinator's shoulders (Ward). Last year, I argued that our defense underperformed all season. Ward showed no creativity in utilizing Clowney despite knowing that every other team catered their offense to minimizing his threat. And his run defenses have always been tragic. If firing Ward means losing a pipeline to undersized underperformers then it seems we have nothing to lose. The fact is we are at the end of an era. Do we rebuild with more of the same on defense or try to find someone who can make progress and keep up with the changing college football landscape? Easy answer: cut your losses and move on. Ward is abysmal and never wasn't.
