WTF? Lots of bad choices here. The article starts off with a poor decision as the key departure from Alabama. Jacob Coker did a great job as QB, but the backbone of the offense was UA's and the SEC's season record breaking running back in both yardage and touchdowns as well as the resounding choice as the nation's best player (hello, the guy carrying the Heisman) Derrick Henry. Bama has a stable of competent quarterbacks returning including Bateman, Barnett, and others and by the way, Alabama has done pretty well the last two seasons when there was a great amount of the confusion around who would be there signal caller. A stud like Derrick Henry is irreplaceable.
I know he is young (37) and had a few bumps early on in his coaching career (Syracuse, OC at Texas), but I don't know why Major Applewhite is not being thrown around more in these coaching carousel articles – especially at some of the non-big five conference jobs such as UCF and North Texas. It is not just that he was a great player and knows what it takes on a personal level to win (being a great player and a great coach is not always exclusive to one another), but he has proven himself at Rice, Alabama and other stops on his way up.
Les Tucker definitely deserves to be in the very top of this list (definitely above Les Miles). The way he has coached his DB squad into such excellent performances is impressive. Although I still don't think Cyrus Jones and the rest of the crew have performed up to their best in pass coverage, 13 interceptions is incredible and not too many people would have predicted such. The one thing that blew me away against LSU was how the sub-180 pound cornerbacks and safeties went nose to nose with the brutal running 230 pound Leonard Fournette time and again. I don't think anyone would have predicted UA performing as well as they did against the LSU running back. Then again, Bama's front seven did not let Fournette into the second level that many times.
I could not agree more with your opinions on Lundquist and Danielson. CBS should have given up on those two years ago. Lundquist just has a job because of his unique voice (which is, unfortunately, like nails on a chalkboard to me) and Danielson is an absolute moron that does nothing but repeat his same tilted observations over and over ad nauseum. With that being said, get off of Finebaum's ass. Yes, he does appeal to the lowest common denominator when it comes to the characters that he chooses to entertain as call-in personalities, but he has the respect and ear of every one of the country's best commentators, coaches, and experts. I expect people in Knoxville to hate Paul due to his conversion from Volunteer to Alabama crony, but he is knowledgeable, entertaining, and straightforward.
This reminds me of Troy from the days when they were still Troy State and a powerhouse of the old Division I-A. Their head coach, Larry Blakeney, was chased off of the Auburn coaching staff due to the Eric Ramsay scandal from the early 90s. So throughout the 90s if an Auburn player got in trouble with the law or could not make their grades they would be shipped to TSU. Because they were transferring from Division I to I-A they did not have to sit out a year. Troy would give them grades so they could return to the plains for their senior year. Blakeney also got a good many of his players from penitentiaries.
