All aboard the Great White Hope. War Damn.
Yeah, they pretty much all say stuff like this every year. From most fans perspective, expectations aren't very high this year. Don't lose to MS state for a third year in a row, Don't lose to a first year HC @ Georgia, and keep the games respectable against LSU and Alabama and Malzahn will get another year.
Maybe not a surprise, but still disappointing. I put more of Muschamp's worth to Auburn as a recruiter than coordinator. We've had "good" D. Coordinators before (Van Gorder and EJ were considered to be home run hires when we landed them) and still performed subpar. Personally, I think elite defenses are simply a thing of the past that no longer exist due to 1.) proliferation of uptempo offenses and 2.) changes in rules for violent hits/targeting. Auburn got burned this year because big time playmakers like Carl Lawson and Dee Ford were absent and there wasn't enough depth to fill those voids. Also, from a perception and momentum standpoint, it doesn't look good when almost every 5 star recruit from the state that plays defense (especially when they go to AUBURN HIGH SCHOOL) would rather wait behind 2 or 3 other 5 star recruits than probably start right away at Auburn (or most other D1 schools for that matter).
Great hire. Hopefully, we can pick up some big defensive commitments before signing day, we really need to shore up our D line.
Disappointed but not heartbroken. Our tigers fought tonight where they would have laid down in the past. Feels like the program is in good hands, big picture wise. Good game Bama. Enjoy Saban while you can, he won't be around forever.
"Mizzou WILL drop one." LOL
I think it's a bit early to start talking one hit wonders, but I definitely disagree that he's another Chizik. As great as Saban is, do you think he could have taken the 2012 tigers and turned them into the 2013 version? Whether or not he can sustain that level of success; we'll see how this season plays out and how next year unfolds. I think his attention to detail is a lot better and he seems to have way more control over the program as a whole, almost to some of the "control freak" levels that Saban, Belichick, and Harbaugh are said to have. What makes a lot of us so hopeful for him, other than his record, is the way the team has played under him. With the exception of Georgia, Auburn has been in every game they've been in under Malzahn. They would lie down and get blown out under Chizik. For me, the Iron Bowl is more about seeing how Auburn responds to that GA loss and seeing if they can find enough drive to at least keep it interesting. Under our circumstances of not having anything to really play for in the post season (Cough cough Oklahoma, Cough cough Sugar Bowl), I think that will be another pretty good indicator of what kind of coach he is.
I say give him at least another year...one problem we've had in the last few years is a CONSTANT turnover in coaches and coordinators. Bringing in anyone new, even Muschamp, will just be starting from scratch and making our guys learn a brand new defensive scheme all over again. EJ didn't forget how to coach overnight, we're missing key players like Lawson and others that left early for the NFL. As far as "historically bad numbers", yeah us and probably everyone else when you look at how most offenses are nowadays. Finally, remember when Ted Roof was our problem and we thought BVG was our solution?
I'll proudly take Malzahn over Mark "Lose to Steve Spurrier and then Choke in the SECCG" Richt.
