FLORIDA FRESHMAN QUARTERBACK TREON HARRIS

Stats: 50-of-100, 50 percent, 896 passing yards, 7 passing TDs, 3 INTs, 6 sacks, 142.4 rating

Big-time game: Harris played in eight games this year for the Gators, starting the last five. His best game in my opinion was against the Vanderbilt Commodores. Harris was 13-of-21 for 215 yards. He didn’t have any touchdowns through the air, but he did have two rushing touchdowns in the 34-10 road victory.

Not his best effort: I have to say Florida State was Treon’s worst game. He completed only 13 passes on 32 attempts for 169 yards and one touchdown. He had two very costly interceptions, one of which was returned for a 95 yard touchdown. That play changed the entire game and if he could have completed more passes and taken care of the ball, I believe the Gators would have won that game.

Improvements: Harris is a freshman and freshmen make mistakes. He had three picks on the year, two of which came in that season finale against FSU. He played pretty well overall, but he will definitely need to improve on his accuracy. He can improve his arm strength as well, but that is what the offseason is for. The Gators will once again have a new offensive coordinator next year. We’ll see what happens in this bowl game and during the offseason.

Strengths: I would say that his strength is his toughness. For as small as he is (5-foot-11, 178 pounds) he was pretty durable this season, especially as often as he ran the ball. There’s plenty of time for him to improve his mechanics and throwing ability, but that you can coach. You can’t coach toughness and Treon definitely has that.

Weakness: Size and youth right are his biggest weaknesses. His accuracy is a weakness as well, but he can work on that aspect of his game during the offseason. He gained some invaluable game reps this season as a freshman, so he’ll have to build on that and really focus during the offseason to learn coach Jim McElwain’s offensive system.

Overall: This bowl game against East Carolina will be a big game for both Harris and for Jeff Driskel. Harris will get the start, but I’m not sure he is the man of the future for the Gators. I think McElwain will want to throw the ball a little more down the field and I think Driskel gives the Gators their best option. This bowl game and offseason will be crucial for both quarterbacks.
