Coaching exits are rarely clean, especially during bowl season, but long-time Denver Post columnist Mark Kiszla says Florida coach Jim McElwain took things a step too far during his in-game interview at the Las Vegas Bowl featuring his former team.

Colorado State, a program McElwain turned around and led to 10 wins this season, was manhandled by Utah and Kiszla harshly critiqued McElwain’s insensitivity surrounding the game.

Here’s an excerpt from his column published in Saturday’s Post:

Bolting for the Southeastern Conference? That was certainly an understandable move by McElwain.

But the insensitivity McElwain displayed by promoting himself during a nationally televised appearance by the Rams? That was a very bad look.

McElwain declined coaching the Rams in their postseason contest after being named the Gators’ new head coach during SEC Championship week.

According to Kiszla’s reporting, interim Colorado State coach Dave Baldwin informed him that each Rams assistant has received termination notices ‘outlining dates and procedures that could send them looking for work elsewhere around the country.

“Life is never fair,” Baldwin said per Kiszla. “And you deal with it.”

Baldwin, along with president Tony Frank, have publicly supported McElwain since his departure, as has All-American sophomore wideout Rashard Higgins.
