When bowl eligibility is discussed, much is made of the 15 extra practices that come with playing in a postseason game. Those practices are considered especially important in developing freshmen. Florida fans are hoping that’s the case for freshman QB Emory Jones.

In a Friday press conference, coach Dan Mullen said that Jones is currently receiving extra reps while the team focuses on fundamentals.

“At the practices, he’s certainly getting a lot of reps and a lot of extra time,” Mullen told reporters. “You’ll see out there today, him building and getting him ready for the spring.”

Mullen indicated that in the case of Jones, these practices are more about getting him ready for spring. The Gators will go into game prep mode Monday for the upcoming Peach Bowl against Michigan. Mullen hasn’t shared what kind of role Jones might have in the Dec. 29 game, but many fans are expecting the freshman quarterback will play.

Jones has appeared in three games (against Charleston Southern, Georgia and Idaho). In the Idaho game, he was 12-of-16 passing for 125 yards and two touchdowns. The new “redshirt rules” allow for players to play in up to four games and still take a redshirt on the season (not count it as one of the four seasons of eligibility).

In Week 11, Jones became the backup quarterback to starter Feleipe Franks after Kyle Trask injured his foot in practice. Trask, a redshirt sophomore, participated in portions of practice Friday while sporting a walking boot.
