Florida can add one more stake to its claim as “DBU.” Former defensive backs Jaylen Watkins and Vernon Hargreaves III have been the top performers through the first two weeks of NFL preseason, according to Pro Football Focus.

Watkins recorded six tackles and an interception during his first two appearances for the Eagles. Hargreaves had two interceptions, zero catches allowed and was targeted just three times on 11 coverage snaps during his Buccaneers’ 27-21 win over Jacksonville in Week 2.

Both players enjoyed decorated careers in Gainesville. Watkins appeared in 48 games and made 28 starts at both cornerback and safety from 2010-13. He recorded 133 tackles, including four for loss, 21 pass breakups and three interceptions before being selected No. 101 overall by Philadelphia in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Hargreaves was a two-time first-team All-American (2014, 2015) and a three-time first-team All-SEC cornerback during his three seasons at Florida. He recorded 121 total tackles, including three for loss, 27 pass breakups and 10 interceptions before being selected by the Bucs at No. 11 overall in this year’s draft.

It will be difficult to argue against Florida’s claim to the “DBU” moniker if its former players continue this trend during the regular season.
