Jim McElwain continues building out his Florida support staff much like Nick Saban at Alabama.

According to the Gainesville Sun, citing sources, Florida has hired former NFL quarterback Charlie Frye. His role for the Gators will entail player development and mental conditioning. He’ll start out as a consultant but could take on a larger role and could become part of the support staff in the future.

Frye played six seasons in the NFL with the Browns, Seahawks and Raiders after he was a third round draft pick in 2005 from Akron.

He spent the past two years as a high school football offensive coordinator at Wekiva in Apopka.
