Florida redshirt sophomore quarterback Luke Del Rio may want to consider the whole “think before you tweet” idea from now on.

Less than 24 hours after the Gators’ embarrassing 54-16 loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, Del Rio sent out this crytpic tweet (he deleted it not long after publishing) which we can all assume was directed toward fans of the program:

Del Rio’s tweet appears to be reference a popular song enjoyed by Florida fans, “We Are the Boys from Old Florida.” In it, the lyrics go, “We are all strong for old Florida, down where the old Gators play. In all kinds of weather we’ll all stick together for F-L-O-R-I-D-A.”

The Orlando Sentinel was able to capture a response to the ill-advised message, and we can assume there were many more that were similar:

“The weather might be better if we had even a halfway decent QB. You and Appleby are by far the worst I’ve ever had to watch.”

Having been sidelined since a loss to Arkansas on Nov. 5, Del Rio — a previous Alabama and Oregon State transfer — has been plagued with injuries throughout the entire season and struggled with consistency during his six appearances for the Gators.

He threw for 1,358 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions this season, and his replacement — Austin Appleby, a Purdue transfer — wasn’t much better, tossing 1,225 yards with eight touchdowns and five picks. Appleby was intercepted three times in the first half of the title game.

With three losses over its last five games, UF (8-4, 6-2) will play Iowa (8-4) in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 2. Coach Jim McElwain indicated Sunday that Del Rio could be available.
