We’ve all seen what Louisville QB Lamar Jackson can do.

While leading the Cardinals’ meteoric rise to No. 3 in the AP Poll, Jackson has thrown for 1,330 yards and 13 touchdowns and has added 526 yards and 12 more touchdowns on the ground, sometimes leaping over a defender in the process.

Though he’s blossomed into a star at Louisville, the Florida native almost ended up in Gainesville as a member of the Gators, according to an ESPN.com article:

“When I was up there making my announcement, I thought I might decommit,” Jackson told the Sun Sentinel. “It really came down to the wire. I felt Louisville was family. Coach Thomas had a great connection with me, and I love how coach Petrino develops quarterbacks. I had to go with my gut.”

One of Jackson’s concerns at Florida was that coach Will Muschamp and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper were fired leading up to his commitment date. Roper led the recruitment of Jackson and when it was clear he would not be retained, Jackson focused his attention on the Cardinals. Though Jim McElwain kept the Gators on Jackson’s radar, the instability likely played a role in Jackson picking Louisville over Florida and Nebraska.

Jackson’s Cardinals have a big game on Saturday, traveling to Clemson to take on the Tigers.
