Jim McElwain needs to see more before handing over the keys to his offense to redshirt freshman Will Grier.

Florida’s first-year coach said Thursday he’ll play Grier and Treon Harris at quarterback in next weekend’s opener against New Mexico State, giving both the opportunity to impress in game action.

The pair has rotated first and second-team reps in camp.

Grier struggled during Thursday’s practice and both quarterbacks have been marred by inconsistency throughout fall camp. Harris and Grier know the playbook and at times have shown flashes they’re capable of leading the team, but for now, it looks like Florida is going with the two-quarterback look until there’s separation under center.

Harris, a sophomore, can make plays with his feet while Grier’s more of the traditional pocket passer. Harris started the final six games of the 2014 campaign including the bowl win over East Carolina and accounted for eight total touchdowns during that stretch.

Interceptions have been an issue for both passers in August.

“It will play itself out,” McElwain said, according to The Orlando Sentinel. “Like I’ve said, and I mean this, you guys keep pushing for this, but there isn’t a timetable. The timetable is figure out a way to win the football game with whoever is moving the team at that position and getting the right parts at the other positions as well.”

Florida’s not the only SEC team going with multiple signal callers in the opener. Alabama’s Nick Saban and Georgia’s Mark Richt both said this week they’re getting two quarterbacks ready to play next weekend with competitions still undecided.
