On Thursday night, it was reported that suspended Florida redshirt freshman DE Jordan Smith may face criminal charges in the ongoing credit card fraud case.

Smith was one of the seven Gators suspended for the team’s Week 1 matchup against Michigan, but it appears his troubles may just be getting started.

On Friday, the Gainesville Police Department confirmed that earlier report, telling 247Sports that Smith is indeed being investigated for credit card fraud and grand theft:

“GPD did open a criminal investigation involving Mr. Smith yesterday that has been forwarded to our detective division for followup,” spokesman Ben Tobias wrote in an e-mail to 247Sports.

The investigation allegedly centers around a rent payment Smith made from a credit card with a different name.

Coach Jim McElwain said on Friday night that he hadn’t heard of any criminal investigation yet, but that may change in the coming days.
