In 2015, the Florida Gators were 10-1 overall before losing games to Florida State, Alabama and then Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Heading into this year, an unnamed Southeastern Conference coach said he believes Florida won’t defend its SEC East crown.

The coach was quoted in Lindy’s College Football Southeastern edition (which is available to purchase). The edition has comments from opposing coaches on each team within the SEC.

“Florida won’t be as good as last year,” said the coach. “They might not finish as high as third. They lost their quarterback (Will Grier transferred). They grew with Grier last year, now they’re back to Ground Zero. They don’t have the same depth and numbers of potential explosive guys on both sides of the ball that they’ve had in the past.”

The unnamed coach goes on to talk about Florida’s recruiting abilities as well.

“It’s surprising, considering the state of Florida has so many skill position players. But a little bit of it is affected by the ebb and flow of FSU and Miami. If you look at history, those three schools trade back and forth, stockpiling elite players. In the last couple of years, it’s been FSU.”

Something can be said about Florida losing a couple star defensive backs in Vernon Hargreaves III and Keanu Neal to the NFL, but any anonymous source can take shots at anybody. Whether it’s Twitter or a YouTube comment, shots being fired without being seen can only be taken so seriously.

If anything, the Gators’ coaching staff and players could look at these quotes as fuel heading into the 2016 season. On the other hand, the team will never know who to take its frustrations out on.

Welcome to 2016, the age of anonymity.
