With 4:01 remaining in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon, the Florida Gators trailed South Carolina 31-28 and faced fourth-and-goal at the Gamecocks’ one-yard line.

The play ended up being a quarterback run by QB Feleipe Franks, who scored to give the Gators the game-clinching touchdown.

Apparently, though, that may not have been the call on the field. On Monday, Franks explained that he couldn’t spot the play callers on the sideline, so he took matters into his own hands:

“I couldn’t find our signaler,” he said. “So I said ‘whatever, I don’t care,’ because we had already gotten in the huddle. Time was running down anyway, so I was like, ‘Let me look at my wristband’ so I could see what plays we had for goal-line situations. It was like one for the running back, one passing it and one where you could run it. So I was like, ‘OK, let me run it.’ To be honest with you, I didn’t even see the call on that fourth down. I was like, ‘They’ll probably get mad at me if I don’t get it,’ but I had confidence I would.”

For a guy who was maybe not going to start the game (if Kyle Trask hadn’t gotten injured during practice), that was quite a performance in the clutch.
