Georgia’s blowout loss to Auburn certainly had an impact on the updated Playoff rankings.

The rankings were released Tuesday night, and the Bulldogs slid from No. 1 to No. 7 after getting blown out by the Tigers. Adding more insult to injury, the two-loss Tigers are now one spot ahead of Georgia at No. 6.

It is a rough spot to be in after starting the season with such a strong start that saw the Bulldogs dominate many competitors and take down Notre Dame in dramatic fashion on the road. While the outlook may be bleak after looking lifeless in Auburn, the ‘Dawgs need to recover quickly and realize they still control their own destiny.

ESPN’s Booger McFarland addressed Georgia’s position on the Playoff rankings show, and he said the Bulldogs should still be feeling pretty good. Jake Rowe with 247 Sports shared McFarland’s comments:

“I think if you’re Georgia you still have to feel pretty good,” McFarland said on the broadcast. “Because if Georgia can go ahead and finish this season, get to the SEC Championship game and win the SEC Championship, Georgia controls its own fate. So if I’m Georgia I’m feeling pretty good about going from one to seven.”

Fellow analyst Joey Galloway weighed in on the conversation, and he sees things a bit differently for Georgia. Galloway believes Georgia’s best shot is to see Alabama in the SEC Championship Game after getting blown out by Auburn.

Regardless of who they face in the SEC Championship Game, the Bulldogs will definitely need to win out in order to make the Playoff. Yes, a one-loss, SEC champion should make the final top four, but a slip up against Kentucky or Georgia Tech would likely eliminate Georgia from contention.
