Devon Gales, the paralyzed player from Southern who suffered his life-changing injury against Georgia last season, is one of the 20,000-plus people that have been forced to evacuate their homes in Baton Rouge due to massive flooding this week.

But according to DawgNation.com, Georgia continues to stand right by his side through thick and thin — coming to his family’s aid through another difficult time. Bryant Gantt, the Bulldogs’ director of player wellness, flew the Gales to Atlanta and picked them up at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport on Sunday.

“They’re fine,” Gantt said in a text message. “They are with me now.”

Gales’ home had recently been modified to become handicapped accessible. Unfortunately, it seems more than likely that it has become a total loss, just like thousands of other homes in the Baton Rouge area.

“Their current home is now under water,” said Reggie Jones, director of Trumph over Tragedy, which is an organization that provides assistance to families dealing with serious spinal cord injuries. “Please consider donating to help expedite the completion of their new home.”

Gales left the Week 4 matchup with Georgia after a head-to-head collision during a kickoff, which resulted in a spinal injury. Gales suffered several neck fractures that were stabilized during his procedure. According to a report from this past spring, his condition continues to improve as he now has more feeling in his legs and can use his fingers “a little bit … but a little bit is better than (nothing).”
