Georgia had the No. 1 recruiting class in the country last year, so a loaded freshman class arrives in Athens to compete with several players with National Championship Game experience. That’s a great combination, but know this:

These five freshmen are all capable of helping the Bulldogs win games. And there are at least five more — or maybe even eight or nine — who will probably see significant playing time as well.

For now, let’s focus on these five, all of whom come to Athens highly regarded after great high school careers. It’s going to be interesting to see how fast they get on the field, and how quickly they contribute in a big way. No doubt, the sky is the limit for these guys.

Here are the first five:

Justin Fields, quarterback

Justin Fields was the No. 2 recruit in the country a year ago, and he has all the tools to be something special. He’s the No. 2 quarterback behind Jake Fromm right now, but that could very well be a fluid situation, even with all that Fromm did as a freshman last year, taking over for Jacob Eason and leading the Bulldogs to an SEC championship, a Playoff win and a national title game appearance.

Fromm was excellent, but there’s something really special about Fields’ skill set. It’s going to be interesting to see how much playing time he gets, and if he can unseat Fromm as the starter.

Zamir White, running back

All eyes are on Zamir White for another reason. He tore the ACL in his right knee in November, and ever since there has been some concern as to whether he will be ready for the start of the season in September. He has been cleared to practice and has been at every workout. He’s wearing a brace on his knee as a precaution, so we’ll see when live action begins how much of a role he will play.

What’s interesting in the 5-star running back’s situation is that he really doesn’t have to play. After all, Georgia is five-deep at running back, and all of them have great potential. The starter, D’Andre Swift, rushed for 618 yards in 2017 as the third-string back. He’s a potential Heisman Trophy candidate who might command a lot of carries. In other words, there’s no sense in rushing White until he’s 100 percent healthy.

Cade Mays, offensive lineman

Cade Mays might have been Georgia’s easiest recruit ever. Mays, a Knoxville, Tenn., native, was a Tennessee commit practically since birth. His father, Kevin, played there and Cade was committed for years. But when things blew up on Rocky Top last year and Butch Jones was fired, Mays decommitted and looked around. Georgia was a quick and easy pick.

Mays (6-6, 318 pounds) is a 5-star recruit who can play several spots on the line, so it will be interesting to see where and when he sees action this fall. There’s no questions he’s going to help a lot. Where is the question.

Tyson Campbell, cornerback

Tyson Campbell comes to Athens from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and the 5-star corner comes with a ton of swagger as well. He has every skill imaginable and seems to be fast-tracking to being a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s that good, at least as a recruit. Everyone has loved him so far this fall.

It’s going to be very hard to keep him off the field. Considering the talent level in Georgia’s secondary, that might be a good thing to have a shutdown corner ready to go. He could very well start at corner from the first game on.

James Cook, running back

The younger brother of Minnesota Vikings and former Florida State Seminoles star Dalvin Cook, running back James Cook has been impressive so far in camp. Much like White, he’s part of a deep, crowded backfield with depth so good there isn’t a team in the country that can touch it.

Again, the issue is going to be how much playing time he’ll be able to see. There’s no question what he’ll do with it, because he’s going to be something special. It’s just a question of time.

Oh, yeah …

We see you Quay Walker, Jamaree Salyer, Luke Ford and the others. Some could argue this is Georgia’s greatest recruiting class ever, at least from a depth standpoint. There might be a dozen freshmen who contribute in a big way before this season is over in January.
