NFL scouts and executives flocked to Athens, Ga., on Wednesday afternoon to take in Georgia’s annual Pro Day.

More than a dozen former Bulldogs worked out for representatives from nearly every NFL team, but one Bulldog in attendance who did not work out for scouts was tailback Todd Gurley.

“Just to be here to support my boys and talk to scouts and see my agent,” Gurley told the Athens Banner-Herald regarding his presence at Pro Day.

Last year’s preseason Heisman frontrunner continues to rehab the torn ACL that cut his junior season short last fall, and his absence from workouts leaves his draft stock in a precarious situation; as far as talent is concerned, Gurley is sure-fire first-rounder, but many wonder if he can return to that player when his knee is at full strength.

Gurley did admit to USA Today that he has been in contact with teams and that teams have asked him both about his recovery from the ACL tear and his suspension for receiving illegal benefits that sidelined him for four games early in the year.

A number of teams from around the league were present at UGA’s Pro Day to speak to Gurley first and foremost, especially after the star tailback declined to allow teams to inspect his knee during last month’s NFL Combine. Among the teams reported to have serious interest in Gurley are the Chicago Bears, which were tied to Gurley by numerous onlookers Wednesday.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution also reported the Carolina Panthers, which recently parted ways with longtime tailback DeAngelo Williams, and a handful of other teams were on-hand to see and speak with Gurley.

Beyond Gurley, there were a number of other storylines surrounding the Pro Day. Wideout Chris Conley, whose workout at the combine left scouts in awe of his physical tools, worked out for teams again Wednesday and again was able to impress many of those in attendance.

Conley reportedly spent close to an hour meeting with Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien, the only head coach in attendance on Wednesday.

For what it’s worth, the Texans recently parted ways with star wideout Andre Johnson, the team’s No. 1 option for close to a decade, which could make room for a wideout like Conley should Houston choose to look that way come April’s draft.

The Athens Banner-Herald also reported that former UGA quarterback Hutson Mason threw off a script on Wednesday, with wideouts Chris Conley, Jonathan Rumph and Michael Erdman catching his passes. Mason was reportedly pleased with his performance, and even shook off a few bad throws throughout the day.

“I think I definitely showed today I can put it out there,” Mason told the Banner-Herald. “I throw a lot of ducks, but I throw a lot of accurate ducks like Peyton (Manning) said last year.”

And like Gurley, a few other familiar faces were on-hand for the Bulldogs’ Pro Day despite having no intention of working out for NFL scouts.

Former longtime Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and former offensive line coach Will Friend, now the head coach and offensive coordinator, respectively, at Colorado State, were both in attendance to support their former players during their NFL auditions, according to The Telegraph newspaper in Macon, Ga..
