Roquan Smith is looking to be the first Bulldog ever to win this prestigious award.

Georgia’s play making junior LB has been named one of five finalists for the 2017 Butkus Award. Smith would be the first player in Georgia’s history to win the award since it was started in 1985. The award is given annually to the best linebacker in the country.

He is certainly deserving after having a phenomenal year leading the Bulldogs defense. Smith has 91 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble while making plays from sideline-to-sideline. He has at least 91 tackles and 5.0 tackles for loss in back-to-back seasons with Georgia.

Smith was named an AP midseason All-American earlier in the season and was announced as a finalist for the Butkus Award Monday. The award shared the list of five finalists. The other four finalists for the award are Michigan’s Devin Bush, Virginia Tech’s Tremaine Edmunds, Wisconsin’s T.J. Edwards, and Clemson’s Dorian O’Daniel.
