Now that Todd Gurley’s illustrious career at Georgia is prematurely over, where does the North Carolina native rank on the Bulldogs’ all-time list of great running backs?

5. Tim Worley, 1985-88: A bruising track star from North Carolina, Worley used his afterburners to rush for 1,216 yards as a redshirt junior in 1988 before skipping his senior campaign to enter the NFL Draft (seventh overall pick). On campus a few years after Walker, Worley’s running style drew immediate comparisons to Georgia’s best player ever for his tendency to break tackles and move the sticks. Worley’s 18 touchdowns in 1988 is third-most ever in single season.

4. Knowshon Moreno, 2006-08: As a redshirt freshman in 2007, the future first-round pick rushed for 1,334 yards then responded with a 1,400-yard campaign when he was no longer an unknown playmaker. He’s one of only two Georgia running backs (Herschel Walker) to ever record at least two 1,000-yard seasons. Equipped with speed and elusiveness, Moreno was nearly impossible to tackle in the open field and finished with 30 touchdowns in two seasons between the hedges.

3. Garrison Hearst, 1990-92: Hearst’s terrific junior season in 1992 led to his early exit and stands as the fourth-best single season rushing total in school history (1,547 yards). Hearst’s 19 rushing touchdowns in a single season was an SEC record before Tim Tebow smashed it during his Heisman season in 2007 with 23 scores. He’s third on Georgia’s all-time rushing list, 53 yards behind Gurley.

2. Todd Gurley, 2012-14: Gurley’s collegiate career may have ended sour with a devastating knee injury following a four-game suspension for autograph signing, but what he did in 30 career games was nothing short of spectacular. Gurley departs for the NFL after this season No. 2 on Georgia’s all-time rushing list with 3,285 yards. His 36 rushing touchdowns is tied for second-most ever with Lars Tate (36). Gurley finished with 18 100-yard games, second only to Herschel Walker’s 28.

1. Herschel Walker, 1980-82: The most dynamic player in program history captured the Heisman trophy during his junior season after disrespecting SEC defenses to the tune of a school-record 1,891 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. He’s the only Georgia ballcarrier to ever rush for over 1,600 yards three consecutive seasons. As a sophomore in 1981, the workhorse set an SEC record that still stands today with 385 carries. Cut from stone, Walker looks like he could still play today at age 52.

Editor’s note: Keep an eye on current true freshman Nick Chubb. The kid’s a three-year player but has a chance to become one of the program’s best ever before his career’s over in Athens.
