Two of the top defenses in the nation will square off in this year’s Belk Bowl in what figures to be one of the top bowl games outside of the College Football Playoff.

SDS looks into the good and bad numbers for both Georgia and Louisville.

The Good

106.8: Despite only starting half of the season, Georgia running back Nick Chubb is averaging 106.8 yards per game, good for second in the SEC. There’s been no other running back as impressive as Chubb in 2014, especially considering being just a true freshman in college football’s toughest conference.

93.7: Georgia may be great at running the football, but there’s not many teams better than Louisville at stopping the run. Former UGA defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has coached up the Cardinals to become one of the stingiest defensive units in the country. Louisville has the talent to maybe be the first team to really contain Chubb for an entire game.

3: True freshman Isaiah McKenzie has quickly become a game-changer in the special teams area for the Bulldogs. His three return touchdowns this season were tied for the SEC lead along with Marcus Murphy.

The Bad

4: Louisville DC Todd Grantham was the UGA defensive coordinator for four years. This will be his first matchup against his former school and will surely be looking to prove a little something extra to his former employer.

5: Senior Michael Dyer has been ruled academically ineligible for the Belk Bowl. The former Auburn back isn’t the team’s leading rusher, but he’s contributed a solid 481 yards and five touchdowns on the season. Dyer’s absence will hurt Louisville’s depth at a crucial position, especially since the Cardinals’ QB position is kind of up in the air at this point.

4.22: Georgia’s run defense was strong early on in the year, but struggled as the season ended. The Bulldogs allowed only 4.22 yards per cary over the course of the season, but UGA is more than vulnerable to give up big yards on the ground. Louisville will need to rely heavily on Brandon Radcliff and hope he has a big day against the ‘Dawgs.
